Nicaro
"Pretentious Mediocrity"
May 20, 2008 - I had dinner at Nicaro's this evening and was greatly disappointed. The lighting was very dark, and I was hoarse by the end of the meal trying to talk to my family over the noise (Nicaro's was only half full- and it was so noisy!)
The food was mediocre. The portions were small and the prices high for the quality of food served.  We sampled the squash blossoms, the calamari with sweet chili sauce, the salmon, and the lamb Bolognaise. The smoked salmon was wrapped in some sort of spinach tortilla or something- was tiny and boring. The lamb Bolognaise came to the table cold.  The meat was too sweet. The calamari was passable, not overly heavy or soggy, but was boring. The calamari themselves were not seasoned, and the sauce was a sweet chili sauce that tasted exactly like what comes out of the bottle. Nothing stellar. The blossoms were spiced right, and the pesto sauce was an interesting accompaniment, however they became soggy and heavy after three minutes on the plate.
For the main course, I had the soft-shell crab on crawfish hash. The soft shell crab was pretty small. The hash had ham in it , which was not listed as a menu ingredient (a surprise to my pescetarian husband). The hash was decent. I enjoyed the flavor contrast of the crawfish with sweet potato. The ham was too fatty for my taste, and I think the dish would be better without it. The crab itself was pan fried, and was bland and lacking in texture (it was a little soggy).
Following the entrees, I ordered the lemon tart, which they were out of.  Nothing else caught my eye so I just had tea for dessert. The dessert orders took nearly thirty minutes to get to the table.  My husband ordered the cheese platter which was a real disappointment. Three small rounds of bread, three pieces of cheese, a small dish of honey and some unknown fruit to the side of it. The waitstaff did not explain what kind of cheese was on the platter.  One of the pieces of cheese was rancid (I know and actually like and enjoy "stinky" cheese, and this was not just that) it was literally fermenting.
My sister ordered the apple crisp with caramel ice cream and was pleased. It was a large serving of crisp (big enough for two people to enjoy) with about a half scoop of ice cream on top.
Overall, my husband and I left displeased, but happy that my father picked up the bill. My husband had to eat again once we got home (the portions were pretty tiny).  If you want to try interesting, great tasting food with a great ambiance, head to Equinox ( which I think this restaurant is trying to copy the style of) instead.  You won't be disappointed there.
